July 17, 2010--IAAGG met at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. Vicki Casteel, visual collections archivist for the Indiana Historical Society, discussed dating and storing old photographs. Preceding Casteel’s presentation was an hour dedicated to research and education. IAAGG member Nancy Wysinger expanded on the topic of the group’s June meeting, providing more insight on placing genealogical research in historical context.
May 15, 2010--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. The meeting featured part two of “What’s Your Problem?,” an exercise designed to help family researchers conquer genealogy brick walls with the help of IAAGG members.
April 17, 2010--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. The group held its Annual Meeting, where officers were installed, then there was a presentation by Michael Saahir and Anne McWilliams, who were recently profiled in the Indianapolis Star for bringing the black and white branches of their family tree together.
March 20, 2010--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. The meeting was devoted to members helping each other break down brick walls and address challenges.
February 20, 2010--IAAGG met at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. There were programs on "Introduction to Ancestry.com, Familysearch.org, etc." and "U.S. Federal Censuses." IUPUI Professor Dr. Modupe Labode gave the Leon Jett Memorial Lecture, "Jim Crow in the Mile-High City," about the ways in which African Americans living in Denver, Colorado confronted segregation in the city’s schools, parks, restaurants, and other public places from the late 1880's through 1940.
January 16, 2010--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. There were programs on "Beginning Genealogy Research" and "Tools For Your Genealogical Research," about Family Tree Maker and The Master Genealogist.
December 19, 2009--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Gina Paige of African Ancestry, Inc. presented a program, and there was individual DNA testing offered.
November 21, 2009--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Dr. Robert Mullins presented a program on Ransom Place Studies, and older residents of Ransom Place spoke. Dr. Robert Mullins is an Associate Professor and Chair of Anthropology at IUPUI. His research focuses on the relationship between race and material culture since Emancipation. October 17, 2009--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Kristi Palmer presented a program on Sanborn Maps there was a Sankofa session (Sankofa is an Andrinka symbol meaning to reach back and learn). Kristi Palmer earned a B.A. from Ball State University in 1999 in history, with minors in women’s studies and anthropology and a Master's in Library Science from Indiana University in 2001. She has worked professionally in the arena of digital collection organization and metadata creation for over 5 years. Her current role at IUPUI University Library as Digital Scholarship Librarian includes overseeing the campus implementation of the Open Journal Systems and IUPUI ScholarWorks (IUPUI’s institutional repository-including an electronic thesis and dissertation program). Palmer’s research interests include: open access, scholarly communication, and early Indianapolis history. In addition to her work with digital collections she also provides collection development in the area of history, women’s studies, and American studies; and research assistance for IUPUI faculty and students in the same departments.
August 22, 2009--IAAGG held its 6th Annual Genealogy Conference at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. The theme of the conference was "Starting, Restarting or Continuing Your Genealogical Research." Speakers included author John F. Baker, Jr. and genealogist Casandra Brown.
June 20, 2009--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Tonya Hull, Charles Barker and Art Thomas spoke about genealogy software. See the meeting notice (PDF) for more information.
May 16, 2009--IAAGG met at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Dr. Earnest Berry, Research & Education Chair, presented a program on land records and how they can help your genealogical research. There was an ice breaker to get to know one another and a survey on how IAAGG can better serve you. There was also a preview of the IAAGG's 6th annual conference, "Starting, Restarting, or Continuing Your Genealogical Research," which will be held on August 22, and a Question & Answer session with experienced researchers to help you break down your brick walls in research. April 25, 2009--IAAGG had a presence at the Indiana Genealogical Society's annual conference at the Indianapolis Marriott East. Speakers included Curt Witcher, Bennie McRae, Dona Stokes-Lucas and Dr. Alan January, and topics included the Underground Railroad and "Transition From Slavery To Freedom."
April 18, 2009--IAAGG held its annual membership meeting at the College Avenue Branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (located at 42nd Street and College Avenue). Read the agenda (PDF format) for the meeting.
March 21, 2009--IAAGG toured the IPS Crispus Attucks Museum (1140 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St., Indianapolis IN 462092). After the tour there was a panel discussion on school records, yearbooks and other memorabilia. The IPS Crispus Attucks Museum professionally houses treasures from the first all-black high school in the state of Indiana and its history-making African American community that produced such legends as basketball great “The Big O” Oscar Robertson, jazz great Freddie Hubbard, and opera sensation Angela Brown. The museum's archival collection consists of yearbooks dating back to the turn of the century, plus a vast collection of city and state memorabilia, with an especially rich collection of African/African-American memorabilia and art.
